FAIL (the browser should render some flash content, not this).

Many thousands of web owners find their sites on the blacklist or fail to get the ranking they work for because of SEO mistakes they have made. Most of the website owners don’t even realize that what they do is wrong. They have read an article on how to get traffic and applied the advice without considering the consequences. Some web owners are the victims of fly by night online marketers who deliver short term results, but once the search engines pick up on the techniques used, the poor web owners see their sites blacklisted. Getting back on track is hard work, but by following our advice on how to avoid SEO mistakes, you can eventually get your site to rank well again.

Stuffing a Page with Keywords

This is one of the most common SEO mistakes that can be avoided when you make use of a reputable search engine optimization company such as Intoweb Marketing. There is a fine line between optimal placement and the stuffing of keywords on a page. This is basically where a web page has been over optimized for a keyword or key phrase. Even though the keyword may only appear five times in the text or body part of the page, the value may be too high because the keyword is also used in the links and alt tags and may have been repeated too often in the first few lines of the page. The keyword density should be 3-10%. If it appears more than that, you stand a chance of receiving penalties for the page.

Google for instance, makes use of the Florida update to investigate content. The title, heading and the first few lines on the page carry more weight than the rest. The last paragraph also receives more weight. When the page is optimized we take great care to ensure that the perfect balance is kept between content and keyword density. We look at how many times it is repeated, how many words are on the page, if the keyword is in bold or italics, has it been used in the links or sub-headings etc. when we optimize articles and pages on your site.

Hide and Seek

A black hat trick that is frowned upon by search engines, is the technique used where the wording is made the same color as the background. It is thus not visible to the human eye, but it is visible to the search engine. The idea is to fool the search engine by the appearance of relevant text when it is of no use to the reader. Some web owners fall into this category without their knowledge. If for instance, your site has a green background with a beige table and the wording is also the same green as the background, the search engines might see it as an attempt to fool them, and penalize your site for it. To overcome the problem, we normally change the text color one to two grades from the background color.

Mirror Sites

This is one of those SEO mistakes you can avoid altogether. A mirror site can be described as a duplicate site. Google treats it as duplicate content and thus filters the results to only display the original site. Doorways also fall into this category, but can lead to blacklisting. It is a site created with the purpose of creating another access point and to manipulate search engine results. Since the search engines want to return the most relevant search results, this type of black hat trick is dealt with through blacklisting

Avoid too Many Low Value Links

One of the more common SEO mistakes is the eagerness to get incoming links to push page ranking up at Google. Unfortunately a link from a site with a poor reputation can cost your site to be ranked lower. It is also true that link farms don’t help your page rank either. Instead of getting hundreds of links in from sites not relevant to your site, you should opt for a responsible link exchange program as offered by Intoweb, where only high ranking, mature and complimentary sites are targeted for back links. If a site has too many outgoing links already, getting a link from that site is not worth your while.

The above are only a few of the many SEO mistakes that can cost your dearly. Contact us at Intoweb Marketing to help you avoid these and other fatal errors in optimization. Doing it right the first time around is worth the investment.
